Jeep JL & JT Rubicon Locker Sensor Failure Explained By ROCKRIDGE 4WD. Can it be avoided?
Disclaimer. Raw footage. I’m not a videographer. I have no aspirations to be a videographer. This is my quick attempt at explaining why and how the Jeep JL & JT Rubicon locker position sensors fail and how the locker sensor gets disrupted when the Jeep is being geared. All of this information is simply being put out there. If there is something I’m missing, please comment and help everyone learn. For now, I’m very confident in this information. Take it for what it’s worth. Maybe it will help customers or shops protect themselves from false claims.

    So I installed the Z OEM in the front axle. (That's where I have oil leaking in the plug) But now my service axle light stays on instead of randomly going on and off. Does anyone have this issue or thoughts about this? Thinking about a direct wire to a new switch for a solution.

    There is an informative thread on JL wrangler forums how to inject electronic potting compound into those sensors. At 12K miles I potted both sensors on my 2019 JLUR and have peace of mind with new synthetic fluid and potted sensors. The sensors are Hall effect design that has been used in proximity sensors for decades. The sensor are made by TE Connectivity. Oil is not an electrical conductor and the video pointed out fresh oil seeping into them is not a problem, however the oil has tiny metal particulates that over time destroys the sensor electronics. The Z automotive bypass harness is probably a good remedy for many but I personally like to know the locker light is illuminated because it knows it's mechanically engaged with feed-back.

    • @jeffharvey9437
      @jeffharvey9437 8 місяців тому

      Correct, the metal particulates are the issue. The potting only seems to work if the sensor is not yet contaminated. I agree, I like the feed-back as well. The Z Auto sensors don't always work. I've found oil at every connection.

    0:57 unreliable? LOL You put a cable in (that freezes up in snow/slush; I ran one for 3+ years) to ‘fix’ a VERY reliable oem axle disconnect. Nothing wrong with it. Just because it needs a new harness or vac motor after 25 years doesn’t mean it’s no good.

    • @Rockridge4WD
      @Rockridge4WD Рік тому

      Have at it. Some do. Some also pot the sensor. The sensor “lid” is not meant to come off but it can. You would have to re seal it and maybe you can do a better job than the OEM.

      My personal JL rear sensor is full of oil. It’s a 2020 with about 21k now. Since I’m not on a customer time line with it. I’m going to do just that and see if I can get enough info to maybe change the entire harness from the sensor to the chassis harness and do it right. If that happens I’ll make another video. I will likely make another video if I come up with something for the sensor alone. Ideally if you acquired a new unit from FCA that would be the time to “pot” the sensor.

    Just FYI the cable is pulled away from the locker "Fork" with the control lever in the Jeep, then the little springs in the locker disengage the locker, they do not push the cable up the sheath. I went with air on my lockers with electric solenoids to switches and a C02 tank. I have a minimum of two tanks with me always and worse case scenario I can go with the drive away OR plumb it into my on board air used for tires.

If it was lubed with the main differential, why would we need to add additional oil? Just a bit confused here is all...And Thank You for taking the time and creating the video!

  • @littletoze

    Curious, wouldn't another option be to simply turn the shift fork around, and forget about it, to save money.

    • @cb-gz1vl
      @cb-gz1vl 2 роки тому

      I did something similar. The shift fork is held with a clip on the shaft. You can remove the clip, slide the shift fork to one end and put the clip back to pin it to the other end. That then locks it. I think removing this assembly is better overall for tough 4wd driving since it is a fail point but for regular 4wd work its fine. The only drawback is you don't get that 4wd light coming on which the cable kit will do for you.

    Good review but my one suggestion and a big pet peeve in watching reviews or listening to people speaking in front of people is when they say UMMM so much it’s like you’re trying to think of what you’re saying is the truth or not and makes it seem like you’re not sure of anything you’re saying so next time you do a review try and not say UMMM so much. In this video you said UMMM more than ten times and I am willing to bet you said it more than thirty times and it was getting on my nerves so bad where I almost didn’t finish the video

      4x4 is not always engaged since the T-case is not engaged but yes, the front axles will spin on both sides. The driver side does anyways with or without the solid axle. It will essentially be like every other solid axle Jeep without CAD.
